Youth Culture Corner - Cacao as Living Heritage

Youth Culture Corner exhibit at the World Food Forum, organized by ICCROM with the Embassy of Ecuador. What if the food we eat could tell our story? For nearly 70 years, ICCROM has worked to protect cultural heritage in all its forms – from monuments to memories, from traditions to tastes. This week, as we celebrate both World Food Day and the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, we’re reminded that food is culture: a living heritage that connects people, places, and generations. Beyond ingredients and recipes, food embodies intangible cultural heritage – the knowledge, skills, and traditions passed down through families and communities. “Food heritage brings these dimensions together as a living expression of identity and memory, as well as creativity and innovation - it is a bridge between people and nature, past and future. It shows how culture and community can inspire more sustainable ways of living.” Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, ICCROM’s Director-General From ancestral farming methods and cooking techniques to festive celebrations and shared meals, these practices ensure that the flavours of our culture continue to evolve and inspire generations to come.
