Building children’s confidence and resilience for success in life and work

Transferrable, 21st-century skills and soft skills are critical for children to learn and maximize their potential to enter and survive the fast-changing labour market. While hard skills are easy to identify, measuring soft skills has not been easy as various elements of competencies are interlinked to measure the overall capacity of a person, beyond school grades and/or CVs. In response to this and with the support of Chery Automobile, UNICEF South Africa piloted measuring selected competencies among learners, using the power of AI to analyze large datasets and simplify and scale trends. While considering any risks and concerns, further exploration into using AI may help to enhance the quality and relevance of the national education system as South Africa strengthens its competency-based approach to education.
