Girls in Kisumu gain condfidence in science and technology through Estonia–Kenya STEM Initiative

To strengthen STEM education in Kenya and increase girls’ participation in science and technology, CIVS Kenya and NGO Mondo (Estonia) have implemented a pilot programme introducing the Estonian HK Unicorn Squad methodology in Kisumu County. The initiative, funded by ESTDEV, focuses on girls aged 9-11 and equips schools with STEM clubs, teaching materials and teacher training to make science learning engaging, practical and accessible. The project “Adapting and Piloting the HK Unicorn Squad Model in Kenya” established STEM Clubs in St Christopher’s Kolunga Comprehensive School, Lake Comprehensive School and Orinde Comprehensive School. More than 300 girls have taken part in weekly sessions that introduce robotics, electronics, engineering principles and coding through a discovery-driven approach. Teachers from the participating schools received training during a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop in July 2025.
