Effectiveness of tafenoquine and primaquine | APMEN TechTalks
The APMEN webinar explored recent breakthroughs in the treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria. New tools—including single-dose tafenoquine, short-course high-dose primaquine, and a novel quantitative point-of-care G6PD test—are opening up promising pathways for more effective radical cure strategies. However, questions remain about tafenoquine’s comparative effectiveness. The webinar also highlighted findings from the EFFORT trial, a multi-country randomized controlled study conducted in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Pakistan, which assessed the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of these new approaches. These results provide critical evidence to guide national policy updates and accelerate progress toward malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific by 2030.
