Using a bomb to catch fish?
In Indonesia, Sophian once caught fish the only way he knew how... by tossing a bomb underwater.
Fish caught this way sold for only half the price, and Sophian could see the coral reefs being destroyed. When he switched to using handlines, spears, and nets, not only did he watch the reefs begin to heal, but his catches also provided a steady income.
With support from Rare, Sophian now proudly protects his community's waters from further damage and overfishing. By designating some areas as protected reserves and others for managed local fishing, both nature and people can thrive.
It's important to remember that this transformation did not begin with punishment. It began with being invited into the conversation and being asked what kind of future Sophian wanted for his children. In that space of respect, change took root.
