Getting Gaza's Children Back to Learning
Prolonged conflict and displacement have disrupted education and left almost every school building in Gaza severely damaged or destroyed. UNICEF is leading efforts to get every school-aged child in Gaza back to in-person learning by scaling up the number of temporary learning spaces.
Jonathan Veitch, UNICEF Special Representative in the State of Palestine, reports from Al Neel school in Gaza City, where 1,850 students have resumed their education with support from UNICEF.
Veitch visits a tent where seventh grade boys are studying science. UNICEF provides basic school supplies, but there are no desks yet, so for now, the 13-year-olds sit on the ground. Efforts are underway to equip each classroom with furniture.
As of April 2026, UNICEF is directly supporting more than 150 temporary learning spaces across the Gaza Strip. The goal is to scale up education services to reach 300,000 children by the end of 2026. "We're about halfway there now," Veitch says. "We've still got a long way to go, but we're making steady progress."
