Event Summary: Mental Health Mapping in Kenya
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT OSM) recently hosted a successful volunteer recognition webinar in celebration of International Youth Day. The online event celebrated the contributions of volunteers who participated in the Mental Health Mapping campaign in Kenya.
The webinar, attended by 57 people, highlighted the crucial role of community mapping in improving public health data. The project focused on using open-source tools like MapRoulette and OpenStreetMap to update health facility information with vital mental health attributes, including "Counselling Psychotherapist" and "Fee."
Guest speaker Dr. Adede Chrisgone from Medic provided an expert perspective, recognizing the volunteers’ efforts. Top contributors shared their firsthand experiences, emphasizing the power of on-the-ground data collection through methods like onsite visits and mobile calls.
This initiative resulted in significant outcomes:
34 participants trained
388 health facilities updated
248 facilities with fee information added
240 facilities with descriptions added
This work demonstrates how open data and youth engagement are key to building climate resilience and improving access to essential mental healthcare services in the region.
