EP 2: Don't Waste This | Pap in South Africa

About this podcast: From the treasured Sunday roast to your everyday porridge, 1.05 billion tonnes of food goes to waste every year. But we're wasting more than what ends up in the bin — we're losing culture, community, and our future. Don’t Waste This is a podcast by WRAP, the global environmental action NGO, exploring what’s at stake if we don’t fix the broken systems we all rely on — starting with food. Through stories from the Food Pact Network, we meet the people and places fighting to protect what matters most, and discover how local action is driving global change to transform our food system and reduce food loss and waste. But behind the familiarity and comfort of starchy foods lies an abundance paradox. South Africa can grow enough staple food to feed its population and export to the world, yet 10.3 million tonnes of food are wasted every year while nearly 15 million people face food insecurity. WRAP’s Talya Shalev speaks with Matlou Setati from the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa about how climate change is disrupting the ability of farmers and households to grow staple crops, the scale of food waste across the supply chain, and why shifting mindsets is just as critical as changing systems to protect the foods that feed South Africa — and the people who rely on them.
