Supporting women’s livelihoods through food systems research: A story of seaweed in Fiji
As a valuable source of both food and economic development, Kappaphycus seaweed is a precious marine resource for the communities of Sawakasa, Fiji.
And while women have taken a strong lead in farming and preparing the seaweed for global markets, they have faced numerous economic, social and climate-related challenges along the way.
Today, research is uncovering nature-based solutions that are strengthening the quality, resilience and market potential of Kappaphycus farmed in Fijian waters, with impact that ripples across the entire food system – from local economic benefit to improved food security.
