Bhutan has identified quinoa as One Country and One Product (OCOP) in 2021. Quinoa was selected for its high nutritional value, potential to generate income for farmers, and suitability for export and trade. As a climate-resilient crop, quinoa also presents an opportunity to mitigate the impacts of climate change on Bhutan's agriculture, particularly in the face of increasing environmental challenges. Quinoa from Bartsham Gewog in Bhutan is being developed as a Geographical Indication and Environmental Sustainability (GIES) product, with support from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This initiative seeks to certify the product based on its unique origin, traditional farming methods, and environmentally sustainable practices to enhance its value and access to premium markets.
