Decorator Crab - A Master of Disguise

Decorator Crab - A Master of Disguise

Decorator crabs behave like fabulous divas with a fashion sense. But actually, they’re masters of disguise that employ a rather unusual behaviour to avoid being eaten. They attach algae, sponges and sea anemones (yes, that’s right, actual living sea anemones!) to their shells using hooked bristles called setae. When crabs grow and moult, they have been known to remove all their decorations from their old shells to reattach them to their new shells. Whilst the behaviour is a survival strategy, they certainly do look good doing it.
