EUMETSAT Earth view – Indian Ocean
Welcome to our new Earth imagery stream over the Indian Ocean, as seen by the Meteosat-9 weather satellite in geostationary orbit 36,000km above the Earth.
The imagery is updated every 15 minutes when a new image is received.
All times are in UTC and there is a 30 minute delay due to the time taken to process each image and add it to the stream.
Meteosat-9 keeps an eye on the weather, recording imagery in 12 spectral bands with a spatial resolution of 3km (1km for its high resolution channel).
Meteosat imagery is crucial for nowcasting, which is about detecting rapidly developing high-impact weather and predicting its evolution a few hours ahead, in support of the safety of life and property. Observations are also used for weather forecasting (as input to numerical weather prediction models) and for climate monitoring.
Satellite imagery acquired by Meteosat-9 can also be accessed using EUMETView, which is available at https://view.eumetsat.int
