A year of sea ice - 2024

Witness the pulse of our planet in this dynamic animation of 2024’s sea ice concentration at both poles. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, watch the sea ice wax and wane as it hits critical yearly minimums and maximums in a changing climate. The animation uses the global sea ice concentration (AMSR-2) product which is produced by the EUMETSAT Ocean and Sea Ice SAF (OSI SAF). Access the product What is the OSI SAF? The OSI SAF (https://osi-saf.eumetsat.int) provides comprehensive information on the ocean-atmosphere interface. What are SAFs? Using specialist expertise from the EUMETSAT member states (https://www.eumetsat.int/who-we-are/eumetsat-member-states), satellite application facilities (https://www.eumetsat.int/about-us/satellite-application-facilities-safs) are dedicated centres of excellence for processing satellite data. They form an integral part of the distributed EUMETSAT Application Ground Segment. SAFs develop, generate and distribute operational satellite products including long-term data record generation.
